Thrills & Spills III Review by Horse & Rider Magazine

The Much Anticipated - and Long Overdue - Release Of Thrills & Spills III On DVD

Sam Morris-Warburton of Horse & Rider Magazine writes...

Refusals, bucks, exits and crashes, Thrills & Spills III has it all - and more!

For those not used to the format of Thrills & Spills here's a little of what to expect from this popular riding clalmity and legends video.

Through the first half of the programme, the focus is on reliving many of the outstanding performances during the first decade of the century by great horses such as Totails, Headley Britannia, Shutterfly and Sea The Stars.

The presentation is excellent with fab transitions between the respective disciplines of Dressage, Eventing, Show Jumping, Racing and Hunting.

Its so refreshing to be able to hear commentary from people such as Pippa Funnell on historic rounds such as Badminton and to get an overarching perspective of the horse sports we all love.

The final section of the DVD is the spills section when jockeys and amateur riders alike do their best to defy gravity!  You can dip in and out of this great video which would make a wonderful Christmas gift or just as an addition to the family DVD collection.

Review - Enjoying Showjumping With Tim Stockdale

Abbey Wass, Editor of Essex Equestrian Magazine Hooked on Horses recently reviewed Enjoying Showjumping With Tim Stockdale:

"After seeing one of Tim Stockdale's lecture demos in person at Brook Farm Training Centre in Essex last March; I was really looking forward to watching this DVD as I know how entertaining and informative Tim is when teaching."

"Tim begins by promising some useful AND fun showjumping exercises for both horse and rider, he remembers something Harvey Smith once told him "you make your rosettes at home - you only go to shows to collect them." Tim then highlighted the importance of good basic flatwork: The foundation of any showjumper, and some of the exercises he rode were specific flatwork exercises that would help when jumping a course later on. Using training of a repetitive nature Tim shows how you can help improve the consistency of your showjumping and regularity of stride - and makes it look very easy.

Throughout the DVD Tim shares many of his tips to help with any level of showjumping. One was that "you don't change the course to fit your horse - you change the horse to fit the course!" He emphasised the need to jump courses at home set out with the correct distances, whether your horse is long or short strided, or you may get stuck when at a competition.

I found that a lot of the exercises concentrated on using your body to help the horse and improve the way the horse was going. When riding courses or fences on an angle or curving line, Tim explained "that your body has to sell it to the horse" and when he rode down a line of S-shaped fences it was obvious what he meant as his line was so smooth and he made it look very easy!

Throughout the film, the exercises progressed to become more complex - from poles on the ground to lines of fences to fences on a curling line to a "clockface" - which means that whatever your level of training there will definitely be an exercise to help you.

Another plus, as with all DVDs by professional riders, is that you get a real insight of their top horses in training. Tim's advice throughout is invaluable, making this DVD a must for any budding showjumper, or if you want to improve your showjumping technique."

This superb training DVD is now available from http://www.equestrianvision.co.uk/ RRP £19.95, duration approx 105 mins. An EV Production.

Enjoying Dressage 2 With Richard Davison

Enjoying Dressage 2 is part two of the popular Enjoying Dressage Series with Richard Davison. Abbey Wass, Editor of Hooked On Horses Magazine gives us her views on the DVD.

Richard gives a masterclass on the rider's seat, getting structure to your training session and flow in your lateral work, how to get an uphill canter and sprin ginto flying changes, assessing the young horse and extra curricular training.

First up was a whistle stop tour of the riders seat and position in trot, canter and also walk - something that can sometimes be overlooked warned Richard. Richard began by explaining that the dressage position should be as if you are standing up but with your knees bent, and demonstrated on his first horse Hiscox Artemis.

A great tip for those who find sitting trot more difficult, is to go sitting whilst the horse is moving sideways - this makes it more comfortable for horse and rider the three time olympian explains.

He next rode another of his horses, Hiscox Aliano and covered a variety of exercises from the most simple of lateral movements - the leg yield - right up to some more difficult movements, so that whatever level you and your horse are currently working at, there is some advice and exercises to help you both improve.

Richard then progresses to talk about how he works each of his horses everyday, going through five stages including warm up - suppling and response, the body of the lesson right through to the cool down. This is ideal for those of us who get into the menage, warm up and then think 'what shall I do next?' In this section you will pick up some interesting tips and ideas that you can try with your own horse.

He emphasises how a horse can change every single day - they can be stiffer on some days for various reasons and sometimes they may be more flexible and its important that you adapt your training on a daily basis to reflect this.

It was interesting to see how responsive Richard's horse was - even to the smallest of changes in his position - some so small it was impossible to even see.

Next, Gillian Davison rode Hiscox Komanchi - a more experienced horse than the first two, with Richard teaching and explaining on foot, as she rode some more complex dressage movements.

Gillian then rode a four year old horse, with Richard explaining what you should look for in a good, young dressage horse - perfect advice for those who are thinking of buying a new horse in the near future. He covered all the attributes of conformation and movement, examining across the paces whilst explaining in detail the positive and negative points and what you should look for when buying your next potential horse.

Richard showjumps his younger horses for a bit of fun, 'playtime' as he calls it - to help them stay motivated and to vary their work. Gillian and Olly rid etwo five year olds over trotting poles, some simple gymnastic jumping exercises and some fitness cantering to finish this masterclass DVD.

After watching Enjoying Dressage 2, I was itching to tack up my horse and practice all the exercises and tips I had just picked up. The DVD is so packed with advice you will have to watch it more than just once so you can get the most out of Richard's expertise and advice!

A must watch for every dressage enthusiast.

Enjoying Dressage 2 is available alongside our many other titles, from www.equestrianvision.co.uk

Great Funnell Factor 2 DVD Review

Funnell Says Relax! By Abbey Wass The release of Funnell Factor 2 on DVD sees Pippa and William Funnell on tour with their renowned Billy Stud horses in a lecture demonstration full of superb riding displays, top advice, and laughter. Funnell Factor 2 was filmed at Hartpury College's magnificent indoor arena during William and Pippa Funnell's lecture tour of the country at the end of 2010. In this show, William and Pippa ride a number of the infamous 'Billy bred' horses. The lecture demonstration starts with some work on the flat and Pippa rode 9 year old 'Billy Congo' - despite him being a show jumper William advises that cross country discipline work can help bring any horse on. Pippa's attention to detail in her position and the way the horse is going is apparent and she explained that each little mistake the horse made was mainly due to her riding and changes of balance, which in turn made the horse lose balance, which was humbling. She finished the flatwork section by donning her top hat and tails and riding a four star dressage test on William's exciting young show jumping stallion. This was informative to watch as Pippa talked the whole way through the test explaining her train of thought as she rides a test in competition, and she kept the horse relaxed and quiet throughout by repeating 'stay relaxed' over and over again! William plans to take him to the European Championships this year so it was great to see this star of the future in training. "Don't ever under-estimate how excercises can help your horse, whatever their age. Always push yourself, next time you ride imagine that you are three inches taller - I bet you will instantly find a difference." - Pippa William then joined Pippa on five year old 'Billy Mexico' as they perform a series of gymnastic jumping exercises - great to try yourself with your own horse after watching the DVD. Again, staying relaxed is the Funnell's key behind their training. Thus preventing the horse becoming tight or hollowing when poles and fences are introduced. Next up was the section I had most been looking forward to - the cross country schooling. The pair ride two six year olds, with Pippa revealing countless cross country riding secrets as well as recounting anecdotes from her illustrious eventing career. In this section Pippa rode one of her compelling young horses 'Billy Beware' and gives William some instruction, as he had stated his intention to join the eventing ranks with his rather portly eighteen hand horse 'Billy Go Lightly'! Something amock with this, but all is revealed later! William is even kitted out in Pippa's cross-country attire - you really do have to watch the film just to see William squeezed into a ladies body protector! The cross country section is jam packed with advice on riding every type of cross country obstacle, from fences on angles to drop fences, and from arrowheads to brush fences. To finish, the main show jumping section rounds off the DVD, with advice from William on practicing the fundamentals of jumping - such as straightness and momentum - with some useful exercises to help improve these, as well as advice for when you are riding at a competition. William rode 'Billy Grand' and Pippa rode 'Billy Angelo' as they then vied for victory in a head to head contest. All in all, two hours well spent, the film is full of valuable content mixed with a lot of fun. I guarantee you will learn lots whilst being entertained by the friendly banter and competitive streak between the husband and wife combination. Successful Show Jumping with Tim Stockdale

Great DVD Review from Cate Ashton of manage-my-horse.com

Buff up on your training with this set of DVD's from Equestrian Vision. Successful Show Jumping With Tim Stockdale is a three volume series in which the international show jumper clearly demonstrates his techniques to becoming a successful show jumper, from the very basics to advanced levels. Tim imparts an enormous amount of information and his enthusiastic natural style will inspire potential or experienced show jumpers of all levels. The three volumes start from the botton and work up to Advanced Show Jumping in the final DVD. These DVD's are really useful and cost £44.99 - perfect for those days when you can't ride, or when you just want to watch and learn!

What Cate had to say:

Tim's methodical, clear approach to jumping is incredibly interesting and I found myself wanting to get outside and practice what I was learning from the DVD, straightaway (often late at night, but of course I didn't!). Tim not only makes it look easy but really does explain what he's doing, every step of the way. I have watched these DVD's more than once and and now really concentrate on his technique and way of going.

Tim's 'saying,' 'canter, rhythm, line, gets it right every time' is without doubt imprinted on my brain and he is, of course, dead right! Highly recommend these DVD's to aspiring show jumpers (like myself) or those looking to brush up skills and learn from one of the best in the business.

Vol 1 - Laying The Foundations. Approx 75 mins.

Vol 2 - Moving On, Moving Up. Approx 70 mins.

Vol 3 - Advanced Show Jumping. Approx 90 mins.

EQUESTRIAN VISION LAUNCHES FUNNELL FACTOR 2 DVD

The 2010 Funnell Factor Lecture Demonstration tour was a huge national success despite the snow before Christmas! If you missed it live, now you have the chance to watch Pippa and William in action in this informative and entertaining DVD, in the comfort of your own home.

Funnell Factor 2 was filmed at Hartpury College’s magnificent new indoor arena during William and Pippa Funnell’s lecture tour of the country at the end of 2010. In this show William and Pippa ride a number of the ‘Billy bred’ horses. Pippa starts with ‘Billy Congo’ and finishes the flatwork section riding a 4 star dressage test on William’s exciting young show jumping stallion. William then joins Pippa on ‘Billy Mexico’ as they perform a series of jumping exercises. In the cross country section Pippa rides one of her exciting young horses ‘Billy Beware’ nicknamed ‘Gorgeous’ and William states his intention to join the eventing ranks with his rather portly new horse ‘Billy Go Lightly!’

Finally in the main jumping section William rides ‘Billy Grand’ and Pippa ‘Billy Angelo’ as they vie for victory in their head to head contest.
